LipitorŪ (atorvastatin calcium) is manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and is the most often prescribed medication in America used for the treatment of high cholesterol. Over 18 million Americans take Lipitor to help reduce cholesterol levels.

What is Lipitor?

LipitorŪ is a synthetic lipid lowering agent. It is effect in acting as an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. Mevalonate is an early step in cholesterol biosynthesis within the body. The result is decreased cholesterol levels.

Taking Lipitor - Guidelines

  • Lipitor can be taken with or without food

  • Lipitor can be taken at any time of day

  • Pregnant and nursing women should not take Lipitor

  • Tell your doctor if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, particularly if accompanied by malaise or fever

  • Children should take Lipitor only if advised to do so by their doctor

  • Patients should be instructed to maintain a standard cholesterol-lowering diet before receiving Lipitor

  • Patients should maintain a cholesterol-lowering diet during treatment with Lipitor.

  • The recommended starting dosage of Lipitor is 10 or 20 mg once daily

  • The dosage range of Lipitor is 10 to 80 mg once daily

  • Take only the dosage recommended by a doctor

  • The recommended starting dose of Lipitor for children age 10-17 is 10 mg/day

  • The maximum recommended dose of Lipitor for children age 10-17 is 20 mg/day
