Understanding Lipids

Lipids refer to a group of naturally occurring compounds that are relatively insolubility in water and soluble in nonpolar solvents. They are classified as saponifiable (ester-containing) or nonsaponifiable. Saponifiable lipids are further classified as simple or complex.

Types of Lipids

There are four primary classes of lipids, including fatty acids, glycerides, complex lipids, and nonglycerides. The class of lipids called complex includes lipoproteins, two of which are central to a discussion about cholesterol. These two include high density lipoproteins (HDL/good cholesterol), and low density lipoproteins (LDL/bad cholesterol).

The types of lipids are outlined below.

1) Fatty Acids

Fatty acids can be saturated, unsaturated, or polyunsaturated.

2) Glycerides

Glycerides can be either neutral or phosphoglycerides. Learn more about glycerides and heart disease.

3) Complex Lipids

This group includes lipoproteins, that include the high and low density lipoproteins referred to as good and bad cholesterol, and glycolipids.

4) Nonglycerides

This category includes waxes, sphingolipids and steroids
